Sweden is located in northern Europe. It is bordered by the countries of Finland and Norway as well as by the Baltic Sea and the Gulfs of Bothnia, Kattegat, and Skagerrak.
Covering a land area of roughly 280 square miles, Sweden is a bit larger than California and the 56th-largest country in the world. The terrain is comprised of gently rolling lowlands, but the western region is mountainous. There are 97,500 lakes in Sweden. Stockholm is the country's largest city and its capital.
As of 2015, 9.7 million people reside in Sweden, 85 percent of whom live in the cities. The primary official language is Swedish, but Finnish, Yiddish, Sami, Meänkieli and Romani are also considered official languages of Sweden.
