The Sahara Desert is located in Africa. It is the world's largest hot desert, covering over 3.5 million square miles in the northern region of the continent.
The Sahara Desert is made up of 25 percent sand dunes. It also features valleys, volcanic mountains and sand seas. The only permanent river that runs through the desert is the Nile. There are about 500 plant species in the Sahara that are able to survive the dry, salty climate. Most of the people who live in the Sahara are nomads who move from place to place rather than establishing a permanent home.
