Asia is the continent with the largest population, with an estimated 4.29 billion residents as of 2014. The continent with the second-highest population is Africa, which is home to 1.11 billion people.
With 742 million residents, Europe is the continent with the third-largest population, followed by North America with 565 million people, South America with 406 million people and Oceania with 38.3 million people. Antarctica has no permanent residents.
Much of Asia's population resides in the densely populated countries of East and South Asia, including China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan and Bangladesh. In addition to having the largest population, Asia has the largest land area of all the continents: 44.5 million square miles.
