Japan is part of the continent Asia. It is an island nation located to the east across the water from Russia, China, and North and South Korea.

The bodies of water that separate Japan from the mainland countries of Asia include the Sea of Japan, East China Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk. The waters east of Japan are part of the North Pacific Ocean. Japan has a total area of 145,925 square miles, with 18,486 miles of coastline. The main island of Japan is called Honshū, with other major islands including Shikoku, Hokkaidō and Kyūshū. The country is composed of a total of 2,456 islands.
