The Republic of Ireland is a European country with an area size of more than 27,000 square miles, which is comparable to that of West Virginia in the United States. It lies west of mainland Britain and its western shores face the Atlantic Ocean. Ireland, also known as Éire, has a population of approximately 4,500,000 and an average life expectancy of 77 years. This country joined the European Union in 1973 and adopted the Union’s euro currency in 1999.
