James Weddell originally named the Weddell Sea after King George IV, but the sea was renamed in Weddell's honor in 1900. The Weddell Sea has an area of about 1,080,000 square miles. Dutch researchers found that they could see a Secchi disc, a circular white disk used to measure the transparency of water, at a depth of 262 feet.
