Some considerations that affect Amtrak's fares prices are the amount of time before a ticket is bought, weekly specials and discounts used by the buyer and a person's eligibility for the train's rewards programs. Weekly specials normally give passengers a 25 percent discount on one-way tickets.
Buying a ticket 14 days in advance also changes the ticket price to 25 percent less than the lowest fare, as stated by Amtrak. Signing up for Amtrak's Guest Rewards program also affects the ticket price.
Passengers register for the program and then earn two points for every dollar spent. These are then redeemable for free travel once 1,500 points are earned.
