Connecticut lies in the northeastern United States, as a New England state. Its border states include Massachusetts to the north, Rhode Island to the east, the Atlantic to the south and New York to the west. The southern border consists of 250 miles of Long Island and Atlantic Ocean shoreline.
The Constitution State was the fifth admitted to the Union, achieving statehood on January 9, 1788. The capital city of Hartford lies in the central part of the state, while the largest city of Bridgeport is in the southwest. At 4,845 land square miles, only Rhode Island and Delaware are smaller than Connecticut in land area.
