The colors of the flag of Senegal are green, yellow and red. They are arranged in three vertical bands of equal width in the order given above, with a small green 5-pointed star in the center of the flag.
The colors are significant. The green in the flag represents progress, hope and the Muslim faith, a faith practiced by 95 percent of Senegal's population. Progress and natural wealth are attributed to the center yellow band. The red signifies sacrifice and determination. These colors are used in the flags of many African nations, as they represent a Pan-African ideal. Notably, the neighboring countries of Guinea and Mali share nearly the same flag; Guinea reverses the order of the bands and omits the green star, while Mali shares the same order as Senegal but omits the green star as well.
