The duties of a city planner may include designing a city's public transportation system, which would include the layout of bus terminals throughout the city. City planners use their expertise to recommend how city land should be used, and that will likely include public transportation.
Most city planners have a master's degree in urban planning, urban design, environmental planning or geography. However, other majors may be acceptable, while some city planners may be able to find employment with a bachelor's degree in urban planning. City planners must have good problem-solving skills in addition to the practical skills learned through their education.
