Southwest flight status can be checked using the "Check Flight Status" tool at the Southwest website. This requires users to input the departure city or airport code, the arrival city or airport code, the date of travel and the flight number. It is also possible to sign up for text message or email alerts using the Southwest website.
Another way to check the status of a Southwest flight, as well as the status of flights with other airlines, is to use the FlightAware flight tracking app. Free to download, the app allows users to view flight status, gate and terminal changes, delays and cancellations, connection information, GPS positioning and departure and arrival notices on their mobile devices. Information is available for all commercial airline flights, as well as charter, private and GA flights. The app can be installed on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Phone and Windows 8.
A similar tool for use in a browser is available at the FlightView website. Like the Southwest website's status checking tool, FlightView asks for the airline name or code, flight number and departure date. If airline information is not known, a flight's status can also be checked by entering the departure airport, arrival airport, date and time. Mobile apps are also available for download from the FlightView website.
