According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, the Caribbean Sea is located in the western Atlantic Ocean between latitudes 9 degrees and 22 degrees North and longitudes 89 degrees and 60 degrees West. Its approximate size is 1,063,000 square miles.
The Caribbean Sea is bounded by the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and Central America, Cuba, Lesser Antilles, and the north coast of South America. The general term "Caribbean" refers to the Caribbean Sea, the islands of the West Indies and the adjacent coasts. Jamaica is the largest island in the Caribbean Sea. Halfway between Jamaica and the Cayman Islands is the Cayman Trough. At 7,686 meters below sea level, the Cayman Trough is the deepest oceanic trench of the Caribbean Sea.
