The capital of Pakistan is Islamabad, as of November 2014. Islamabad has been the capital since 1966 and is in northeast Pakistan. After Pakistan became independent in 1947, Karachi was established as the country's first capital.
Islamabad took over as the capital to encourage more widespread development throughout the country and because Islamabad is more accessible than Karachi and has better weather. Also, army headquarters are closer to Islamabad. While work in Islamabad was underway to prepare it as a capital city, the capital temporarily shifted to Rawalpindi (the site of army headquarters).
The Pakistani government says that Islamabad is the country's most diverse urban area and boasts an extremely competent workforce.
