Amsterdam is the largest city in the Netherlands, with a population of approximately 813,562 as of 2015. The city has often been called the "Venice of the North" due its extensive system of canals. Amsterdam has more than 50 miles of canals, 1,500 bridges and approximately 90 islands. The three primary canals of Amsterdam where constructed in the 1600s. The canals, Prinsengracht, Herengracht and Keizergracht, form a ring around the city center.
