Little Rock is the capital of Arkansas. Little Rock is located about 12 miles southeast of the city of Pulaski, the geographic center of the state. As of 2012, 196,537 people resided in the capital city, a 7.3 percent increase since 2000.
Little Rock has a land area of 116.2 square miles, which gives it a low population density of only 1,691 people per square mile. The estimated median income in 2012 was $45,951, compared to $40,112 for the entire state. The French explorer Bernard de la Harpe named Little Rock in 1722, and the city was incorporated on Nov. 7, 1831.
