U.S. passports are renewable in person at passport acceptance facilities, which are often post offices, libraries and municipal offices. Travelers needing the renewal within two weeks should apply at a Department of State passport agency. Most agencies require proof of travel. Renewals incur the expedited fee at a passport agency.
Renewing by mail is an option when eligibility requirements are met. The traveler must have the undamaged passport to mail with the application. The previous passport must have been issued within the last 15 years, when the traveler was at least 16 and with the traveler's current name. The name requirement can be fulfilled with a certified or original marriage certificate or document issued by the government to show a name change.
