Most post offices, clerks of court and government offices can renew passports. They can also be renewed by sending the proper documents in the mail. The U.S. Department of State website has a passport acceptance facility search tool where a person can find the nearest facility in his area.
To renew a passport by mail, the most current passport must be free of damage and have been issued within the last 15 years and after the person turned 16 years of age. It must also have the person's current name on it. If a change of name is requested, a marriage license or other documentation must be sent in with the passport for renewal.
