A map of the four main Japanese islands is available on GoJapanGo.com. The World Atlas website also features a map of the islands that shows the locations of Japan's major cities, as does Google Maps. GoJapanGo also offers an extensive array of regional and city maps of Japan.
Japan is comprised of four main islands: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. However, it is surrounded by nearly 4,000 smaller islands, including the Ryukyu islands of Okinawa, which lie about 350 miles south of the mainland.
Honshu is the most populous of the Japanese islands and the most central. It is home to the country's capital, Tokyo, as well as the large cities of Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto, Nagasaki and Nagoya. Hokkaido, which is known for its long winters and beautiful scenery, is the country's second-largest island and home to the city of Sapporo, which is famous for its beer.
Kyushu, the most southern of the Japanese islands, boasts a warm climate year-round. It is home to the country's fourth-largest city, Fukuoka, and the small, picturesque city of Nagasaki. Shikoku, the smallest of the main islands, is known for its beautiful scenery as well. The island hosts an annual Buddhist pilgrimage each year.
