The American FactFinder published by the United States Census Bureau is one place to find a list of cities ordered by total population. Along with the decennial Census counts, the bureau provides yearly estimates for each city.
The three most populous cities in the United States are New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.
The American FactFinder also allows users to view a list of metropolitan areas, counties and states by population. In addition to simple population data, the FactFinder is a rich resource for information about population density, demographic information, city characteristics and more. The FactFinder can also be used to view detailed data gathered in the American Community Survey.
