The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad follows the historic Murphy Branch route, which was constructed in the 1880s. Landmarks on the trip include the Cowee Tunnel and the site of the train wreck scene in the 1993 film "The Fugitive." Although Dillsboro has fewer than 250 residents, the town has a tourist-driven economy that supports more than 50 shops, restaurants and lodging establishments.
