The Alaska Department of Transportation, Alaska.org, MapsOfWorld.com and Geology.com have several different detailed Alaska road and travel maps available online. Most of the maps are downloadable and printable. Some websites offer applications available for use on tablets, and the Alaska DOT offers paper copies by mail.
Most Alaska highways are paved or chip sealed, but the state's extreme weather can leave many rough spots. For those vacationing in Alaska, the best driving conditions are from early May until late Sept. Winter drivers should always keep a half tank of gas in reserve and have the vehicle stocked with winter clothing, down-filled sleeping bags and an electric engine block heater for overnight stops. Many travel lodges and service stations close for winter, so always check ahead.
