The North Carolina Department of Transportation provides a chart of road signs in its Driver's Handbook, which is available online in a printable PDF format. In the 2014 handbook, the Traffic Signs portion runs from pages 71 to 75, corresponding to pages 38 to 40 of the online document.
North Carolina's handbook divides traffic signs into three types: regulatory, warning and guide/informational. Regulatory signs such as "Stop" or "One Way" direct drivers to perform in a certain manner. Warning signs give notice to drivers to be cautious of potential dangers or changes in the roadway, such as pedestrians crossing or a signal ahead. Guide or informational signs provide information such as route numbers or rest area locations.
