Travelers can get to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport from downtown Atlanta by driving their personal vehicles or by light rail service, city buses, shuttles, taxi services, executive car services, or limousine services. The airport is a nine-mile drive south from downtown Atlanta along Interstate 85. The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority's Yellow and Red light rail lines provide service directly to a station located inside the airport's domestic terminal.
Although the drive between downtown and the airport is not far, Atlanta has notoriously heavy traffic. Writer Janice McDonald says that traffic on Interstate 85 moves extremely slowly heading from the airport to downtown from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. and heading from downtown to the airport between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. During those times, MARTA's light rail service is likely the fastest form of transportation. MARTA service operates from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. on weekdays and 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. on weekends.
Taxi service from Hartsfield Airport is available from taxi stands located in both the north and south terminals. As of October 2015, taxis charge a flat fee of $30 for travel between the airport and any destination in Atlanta's central business district. Atlanta Link Transportation provides regular shuttle service to the airport, and many hotels offer free airport shuttle service to their guests.
