California is located on the West Coast of the United States. California is bordered by Oregon in the north, Nevada to the east, Arizona to the southeast, Mexico's Baja California to the southeast and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
As of 2012, California's population is over 38 million. The state's capital is Sacramento, and its largest city is Los Angeles. California entered into statehood on Sept. 9, 1850.
Nicknamed the Golden State, California geography is diverse, ranging from the Redwood-Douglas fir forests in the northwest and Mojave Desert in the southeast to the Sierra Nevada in the east and the Pacific Coast in the west.
