Brazil is a democratic nation with three main branches of government: the executive branch, the legislative branch and the judicial branch. Brazil has 27 states and over 5,500 individual municipalities. The municipalities are governed by mayors. In Brazil, literate citizens may vote beginning at the age of 16. Illiterate citizens over the age of 69 may vote.
