United's MileagePlus program allows members to earn points for miles that they fly with the airline. Members redeem these points for various rewards such as free flights, upgrades, hotel accommodations and gift certificates, as of 2015.
Members use miles for free travel on United, Star Alliance and other partner carriers. The program charges a service fee ranging from $25 to $75 to all but Premier Platinum, Premier 1K and Global Services members.
Members can also book hotel stays using miles. Stays are complimentary with enough miles, or members use fewer miles to receive discounts. Rental cars and cruises can also be booked similarly.
Members can also use points to upgrade the status of existing tickets. It is possible to upgrade to better cabin classes, but a co-pay may be required on some flights.
Program members have the option to redeem points for many shopping and dining options. Tickets to various sporting events, concerts and Broadway shows are available. It is also possible to shop for a wide range of merchandise including electronics, home decor, jewelry and cookware. Subscriptions to various magazines and newspapers are also available.
MileagePlus Chase cardholders have some unique options for using their miles, such as annual fee reimbursements.
