Belgium is located in the western region of Europe. It is bordered by the Netherlands and North Sea to the north, France to the west and south and Germany and Luxembourg to the east. Belgium's capital is Brussels.
Belgium plays an important role in world economics: the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Commission and the Council of the European Union have their headquarters in Brussels. The country has three official languages (French, Dutch and German) andtwo major ethnic groups. The Flemings, who speak a language similar to Dutch known as Flemish, live in the northern part of the country. The Walloons, who speak French, live primarily in the south. German speakers are found mainly in an around the city of Liege.
