Barbados is the easternmost Caribbean island, located about 60 miles due east of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Trinidad and Tobago is located approximately 250 miles southwest of the island.
Despite being considered part of the Caribbean islands, Barbados is located in the Atlantic Ocean. It has an area of 167 square miles, and it measures 21 miles north to south and 14 miles east to west. Its eastern location puts it out of the path of most hurricanes, but it does have problems due to overcrowding. As of 2014, a quarter of a million people reside in the small island nation. Such a dense population has threatened the country’s underground water sources, so as of 2014 conservation efforts are ongoing to keep drinking water safe.
