The Bahamas are located in the North Atlantic ocean. The islands are located southeast of the state of Florida and northeast of Cuba.
The Bahama Islands encompass a total of 8,625 square miles, which means the combined size of the islands is smaller than the state of Connecticut. Thirty of the islands have people living on them. The long, mostly flat coral islands have a tropical marine climate, courtesy of the Gulf Stream's warm waters. The location of the islands means extensive flooding and damage from high winds are a problem when hurricanes and tropical storms hit the area. Coral reef decay is also a problem in the waters around the islands.
