Plato places the location of Atlantis near the Pillars of Hercules, which is believed to be the mountains on either side of the Straits of Gibraltar. Many scholars have concluded that Atlantis is a fictional city and does not exist.
Places such as the Mediterranean, Antarctica and a location off the coast of Spain are theorized to be possible locations of the mythical city of Atlantis. It's important to recognize that Atlantis is the creation of the Greek philosopher Plato. No other historical document mentions the city of Atlantis, and many scholars believe Atlantis was simply a fictional city in Plato's writings.
