While those who are granted political asylum in Canada are provided some assistance by the government, that assistance is temporary in nature and does not provide what could be considered a luxurious lifestyle. Assistance to refugees is intended to help the asylum seeker become self-sufficient.
The Resettlement Assistance Program helps refugees find housing, provides them with basic goods and helps them become adjusted to life in Canada. It lasts up to a year. This and other government programs are intended to help those fleeing war, ethnic violence and persecution to start their lives over. Asylum seekers may also be assisted by private charities, but the majority of assistance comes from the government.
