In order to qualify for passport renewal by mail, applicants must be able to submit their most recent passport, undamaged, with the application. The most recent passport must have been issued within the last 15 years and the applicant had to be 16 years of age or older when it was issued. If the applicant's name changed since the most recent passport, the applicant must be able to submit an original or certified copy of either a marriage certificate or a government-issued document as evidence of the legal name change. All other applicants must apply in person.
U.S. citizens residing abroad may renew their passports at the nearest U.S. Consulate or U.S. Embassy with the exception of U.S. citizens residing in Canada, who may mail in their renewal. A passport photo must be submitted with the required documents, and fees should be submitted by check or money order. Expedited service is available in the United States for a fee and should be included with the application fee.Learn more about Geography
