Alabama is noteworthy for its place in American history. Alabama took center stage for many events during the Civil Rights Movement, including marches for voting rights in Selma and the famous Montgomery Bus Boycott. Birmingham, Ala. was also home to the Birmingham Campaign in 1963, a string of peaceful demonstrations which provoked a violent reaction on the part of law enforcement officials.
