Puerto Penasco International Airport is an airport that is located near the Sea of Cortes in Sonora, Mexico. According the airport's website, the airport was declared an international airport on August 5th, 1994. In 2005, the airport was significantly upgraded to be fully equipped with amenities such as parking lots, baggage check-in stations, public restrooms, signage for guests, waiting rooms and snack bars. The commercial flights to the airport are most popular for guests who are planning to stay at resorts on the Sea of Cortez or surrounding areas.
Aeromexico is the only commercial airline that serves Puerto Penasco International Airport. Additionally, Global Air, which is another Mexican airline, flies charter aircraft to and from the airport. The Puerto Penasco website indicates that in 2009 the airport was sponsored by the Mayan Resort Group and the State of Sonora. At the time, the airport expected to be served by Alaskan Airlines and Aeromexico, but it also had negotiations with Mexicana, Continental, American Airlines and America West airlines.
