The city is a major transportation hub and is well-connected to neighboring Halong Bay's largest island, Cat Ba Island. After swimming on its southwest side, local people and guests alike enjoy nights of cold drinks and karaoke at some of the island's bars. Halong Bay has over 1,000 islands made of limestone slopes covered in forests, with Cat Ba Island serving as a great base for exploring the area. Visitors can take part in a three day boat tour where they get to sleep overnight along the Bay's waters and explore the caves that line the shores. The rugged surface of the limestone hills are perfect for rock climbing.
Hai Phong has mild weather year-round, with the best time to visit between November and March. The downtown area has many sightseeing opportunities including temples, shrines and pagodas.
