Some of the activities at High Hill Ranch, an apple farm in Placerville, California, include visiting the apple stand, the Wine Shop and the Cider Mill, and sampling apple treats, from fresh made pies to caramel apples. The Pie House restaurant is on site, as are a private fishing pond and picnic areas. The grounds are used for weddings, company picnics and other gatherings. Pony rides and hayrides are offered on most weekends. Pets are welcome, except in the buildings.
The apple stand is more like an oversized apple barn. This is where the apple donuts, caramel apples and whole apple pies are sold. The pies are sold baked, unbaked or frozen. The latter two options allow guests to bake them fresh at home. High Hill Ranch also sells pie dough for those wanting to make their own pies. Specialties include caramel apple, Dutch apple and sour cream apple-berry pies. Jams and jellies are also sold at the apple stand. Handmade souvenirs and gifts are available at the Woodshed Gift Shop.
The fishing pond, open from September through mid-December, is stocked with rainbow trout and catfish. Since it is on private property, no license is needed. Guests may bring their own gear and bait or purchase it on site. Catch and release fishing is available during the week, which requires special lures and flies. Those who want to keep their catch pay for the fish by the pound, which is the only fee charged to use the pond.
