St. Maarten, the Dutch side of an island shared with France, offers hotels, condos, villa rentals and one eco-friendly property. Camping is not allowed on the island, but three hostels, offering backpackers and others low-cost accommodations, are available. Another accepted spelling for the location is Sint. Maarten.
Phillipsburg is the largest city, located on the southern end of St. Maarten. It is home to a curved stretch of beach fronting Beach Bay and some of the most deluxe properties on the island. Divi Little Bay Beach Resort is an all-inclusive hotel and spa on the western edge of the bay. The Sonesta Resort, also beachfront and all-inclusive, has its own casino, spa and some high-end guest rooms that come with a dedicated butler.
The eco-friendly property is the Turquoise Shell Inn. It has 10 one-bedroom suites with full kitchens and is in a residential area near Simpson Bay Beach. The property has its own pool but is steps away from the Caribbean. Eco-friendly measures include water saver valves, energy saving lights and even reusable shopping bags in the rooms.
The hostels are found near the St. Maarten International Airport, in Phillipsburg and near Simpson Bay. Shared and private accommodations are offered. Beacon Hill Towers, the property near Simpson Bay, operates as an affordable condo and offers a communal ocean view terrace.
