The 13 original colonies were Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Virginia. Delaware is the oldest state in the union, having joined on Dec. 17, 1787, followed by Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia and Connecticut.
