What Is at 0 Degrees Latitude and 0 Degrees Longitude?
The intersection point of the prime meridian (0 degrees longitude) and the equator (0 degrees latitude) is in the Atlantic Ocean in the Gulf of Guinea, almost 400 miles south of the Republic of Ghana on the west coast of Africa. Though this point of intersection exists, its exact location is conventional and is not an important landmark .
The prime meridian is an imaginary line that passes through Greenwich, England, and the equator divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The point at which these two geographical coordinates meet has no special significance and could have been anywhere on the globe.
