All yogurt contains a small amount of naturally-occurring lactose from its milk content, but Brown Cow Farm, Cascade Fresh, Chobani, Fage, Horizon Organic, Stonyfield and The Greek Gods offer plain yogurts with no added sugar and no artificial sweeteners. Dannon and Yoplait offer flavored yogurts utilizing artificial sweeteners.
Since there is natural lactose in milk, no yogurt made from milk is ever truly sugar-free. One serving of plain yogurt with no flavors or additives contains between 9 and 15 grams of sugar. Of the major brands, Chobani, Fage and The Greek Gods have the lowest sugar content.
Chobani's flavored yogurts that do not list sugar in the ingredients list are sweetened with evaporated cane juice. This sweetener is sugarcane-based, and it adds calories and sugar content to the yogurt. It is nutritionally equivalent to sugar-sweetened yogurt. Sucralose is the most common artificial sweetener in other brands; both Dannon and Yoplait use it in their low-sugar flavored yogurts.
Coconut milk-based yogurts are a lower-sugar alternative to dairy yogurt. While coconut milk contains natural sugars, it is much lower in sugar than cow's milk. One serving of coconut yogurt from the So Delicious brand contains 8 grams of sugar, which is lower than even the healthiest brands of cow's milk yogurt.
