The world record survival from starvation is 94 days; the record was set by Irish Republicans jailed in the 1920s. Some Irish Republican Army members jailed in the 1980s survived for 46 to 73 days without eating. They all eventually died.
Hunger strikers who receive fluids begin experiencing severe starvation symptoms around 35 to 40 days without food. Symptoms include confusion, hallucinations and convulsions. Death from organ failure then occurs. Most modern prison hunger strikes end in force-feeding rather than death.
Rita Chretien, who got lost, survived 49 days of starvation. However, she ate some trail mix and hard candy during the ordeal.
