Prep the brisket
Prep the brisket by using a sharp knife to trim away any fat on the brisket's surface. If necessary, the brisket can be sliced into two pieces in order to fit into a slow cooker or Dutch oven.
Cook a brisket in a slow cooker by placing the prepared brisket on top of a bed of vegetables, such as celery and baby carrots, and the sauce of choice. Better Homes and Gardens offers a recipe for a smoky barbecue sauce on its website that can be used in this method of cooking a brisket. Cover the slow cooker and cook the brisket on low for up to 14 hours or on high for up to 7 hours.
Place the brisket in a 13 x 9 x 2 baking pan and pour the liquid of choice over the brisket, then cover it with aluminum foil. Bake the brisket for 3 hours in a 325-degree oven. Turn the brisket halfway between the baking cycle.
Cook a brisket on the stove top
Cook a brisket on the stove top by browning the brisket in 1 inch of oil in a heavy skillet, removing the brisket from the pan and adding two sliced medium onions to the pan. Cook the onions until tender, then return the brisket to the pan and add crushed tomatoes, beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce heat, and then simmer for 3 hours.Learn more about Meat
