USDA Establishment Numbers (EST) are located on the exterior of food packaging. EST numbers often appear between a product's barcode and the nutrition information chart. Some numbers are also available on the lid or metal clips of products.
EST numbers denote the processing plant where food products are produced and inspected. Food items containing EST numbers include meat, poultry and egg products. Each food category is identified by a prefix code. EST numbers for poultry products have a prefix of "P" while the prefix for egg products is "G" or "Plant." Meat products are marked with a prefix of "M" or "EST."
