Unusual tropical fruits are lychees, kumquats, loquats and mangosteens. The lychee is a fruit native to China known for its sweet, fragrant and translucent flesh.
Though they look and taste like tiny, oval oranges, kumquats are not members of the citrus family. Small enough to be popped into the mouth, they can be eaten unpeeled. The loquat is also an orange fruit, but it is related to the rose. It is unusual because the shrub flowers in early winter, and the fruit is available by late winter or early spring. The mangosteen is a purple fruit that opens up to reveal soft fruit that is segmented like an orange. The taste is acidic and sweet.
