The H Mart chain of supermarkets and grocery stores typically carry a variety of products from different parts of Asia, such as drinks, dried foods, snacks, produce and home appliances. The stores also carry many American products, including popular brands of foods and home goods.
Like most supermarkets, the majority of the products sold within H Mart stores are food-based, with a large portion originating from Asian countries or manufactured based on foods from those countries. The stores also feature product and meat departments that carry items commonly found in the United States, as well as in Asian countries.
The H Mart website allows users to browse through a wide selection of the products sold in stores, with categories based on both food types, such as noodles, snacks, spices and beverages, as well as non-food items, such as heath, beauty and baby items. Each listing contains a picture and description of the item, details about the number included in the package and the price minus any site-applied discount.
The name H Mart is taken from the Korean saying "Han Ah Reum," which means "One Arm Full of Groceries." The first store was opened in 1982 in Woodside, Queens, New York, and it operates over 40 stores in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, as of March 2015.
