Truffles are one of the most expensive foods in the world because they are extremely rare and incredibly difficult to find. Depending on current market prices, truffles can cost hundreds of dollars per ounce and several thousands of dollars per pound.
Although truffles have been found in many places around the world, they are primarily located in western Europe, specifically France and Italy. Truffles are a fungus that grows beneath the surface of the ground, with no visible plant growing above ground. The main types of truffles are the white truffle and the black truffle, although some other varieties exist as well, such as the burgundy or summer truffle and garlic truffle. Pigs are often employed to hunt for truffles, although a certain breed of dog, the Lagotto Romagnolo, is being trained to hunt for them as well.
