English trifle, Eton mess, spotted dick, sticky toffee pudding and Banoffee pie are some traditional British desserts. A few others are Eccles cakes, bread-and-butter pudding, mincemeat pie and treacle tart.
English trifle consists of layers of sponge cake or ginger cake, jelly, custard, berries and whipped cream. Some recipes add chocolate, sherry and kirsch. A tradition at Eton cricket games against rival British prep school Harrow, Eton mess is a mixture of strawberries, cream and meringues. Spotted dick is a rich sponge pudding containing molasses, nutmeg, and currants or raisins, and typically served with custard.
Bread-and-butter pudding is a way to use up stale bread. After buttering the bread and layering it in a baking dish, sprinkle it with raisins and pour in a mix of whisked eggs and milk. Season as desired with vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Bake, and serve with custard.
