What Are Subway's Most Popular Menu Items?

The most popular Subway menu item is the Italian B.M.T. sandwich. Called "the sandwich to conquer all hunger", the "Big Meaty Tasty" sub contains salami, pepperoni and ham, and it is served with the customer's choice of bread, cheese, vegetables and seasonings. Other top-selling menu items include the Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki sandwich and the Oven Roasted Chicken sandwich. Sandwiches are available as either 6-inch or foot-long size.

Thousands of American Subway customers voted for their favorite sandwich in an online poll conducted by the fast-food restaurant in 2010. Primarily known for submarine sandwiches, Subway also sells salads, soup, cookies and, at some locations, pizza. The restaurant offers a variety of sandwich toppings and types of cheese and bread, for a total of about 38 million different sandwich combinations.

There are over 41,000 Subway locations around the world, as of 2015. This includes 26,000 franchises in the United States, 3,000 in Canada and an additional 9,600 outside North America. Subway employs about 410,000 people and sells nearly 8 million sandwiches a day.

Subway began with one shop called Pete's Super Submarines, which was opened in August 1965 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, by 17-year-old Fred DeLuca. He changed the name to "Subway" in 1968, and the first franchise location opened in 1974. By 1982 there were 300 Subway locations.
