Homemade bread is fairly easy to make and requires few ingredients. This recipe for sandwich bread was originally featured on The Kitchn.

  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons butter, unsalted and melted
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 cups of flour
  1. Activate the yeast
  2. To activate the yeast, pour some warm water in a large mixing bowl and add the dry active yeast. Let the yeast sit in the water for 5 minutes to dissolve.

  3. Make the dough
  4. Add the melted butter, sugar, salt and 1 cup of the flour. Stir the mixture into a batter. Add 4 1/2 cups of flour and form the mixture into a loose dough. Knead the dough by hand or with a dough hook on an electric mixture until it is smooth and springy. If it is sticky, add 1 more cup of flour.

  5. Let the dough rise
  6. Coat a mixing bowl with some oil. Roll the dough into a large ball and put it in the oiled bowl, coating the ball with some of the oil. Cover the bowl with a cloth and place it in a warm place. Let the dough rise for about an hour until it doubles in size.

  8. Clear some counter space and sprinkle the working area with flour. Split the dough into two separate balls and let them sit on the floured counter top for 10 minutes. Shape each piece of dough into a rough loaf shape and place it into a greased loaf pan. Leave the loaves to rise for 30 to 40 minutes.

  10. While the loaves are rising, turn on the oven to 425 F.
