Spider crabs are edible, but not all types of spider crab taste good. The European spider crab and the Japanese spider crab are harvested for food more than the portly spider crab, which is tough and full of muscle.
Spider crabs are found in different oceans throughout the world. The Florida Keys has the portly spider crab, Japan has the Japanese spider crab and off the French coast is where the European spider crab is harvested.
Spider crabs use camouflage for protection because their claws are weak. These crabs can grow up to 10 feet wide. In Japan, these crabs are protected from harvesting during the spring when the females reproduce in an effort to grow the number of spider crabs, as there has been a decline.
